I keep thinking about the Nobel for Rabindranath Tagore, India’s literary genius who was the first ever Indian to do so for literature and remains the only one so far. How did Tagore get noticed by the Nobel committee? Winning a Nobel requires genius and pathbreaking work, surely. But nominations over the years also demonstrate amply what other things it needs.
